The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library will show the HBO documentary “The Loving Story” on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m.
The documentary tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, who were sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married. Their landmark Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia, changed history, invalidating laws prohibiting interracial marriage. The film includes original footage and interviews with members of the legal team, as well as the Lovings’ family.
“The Loving Story,” produced in 2011, went on to inspire the making of the upcoming dramatic film “Loving” which comes out Friday, Nov. 4, written and directed by Jeff Nichols.
Columbus-Lowndes Public Library Archivist Mona Vance-Ali said, “Seeing the documentary at the library first is a great way to learn about the actual events and see the real people before going to watch the movie in theaters.”
The event is free and open to the public. It will be shown in the library’s Meeting Room.
Snacks will be provided by the Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library.
