The worlds of art and fashion meet and mingle in the creative use of colors, lines and textures. So when the Columbus Arts Council considered ideas for an out-of-the-ordinary fundraiser to support its many year-round community programs, “Art in Fashion” came to mind. The style show featuring fashions for women and men is 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall at 318 College St. in Columbus.
The benefit emceed by Aundrea Self will feature approximately 30 local models and 10 clothiers showcasing the latest fashion trends for fall and winter. Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. Participating merchants are also providing door prizes and special discounts for ticket-holders.
Shops taking part include The Attic Vintage Clothing, Belk Department Store, Deep South Pout, Jim’s Clothing, Lularoe Jenny-Nichol, Melange, Mom 2 Be, Park Place Boutique and Salon, Reed’s of Columbus and Susan’s Hallmark.
“It’s the time of year when seasons are finally changing. We all want ideas on how to switch up our wardrobe, and the best ideas come from our local stores!” said style show committee member Anne Freeze. “Our arts council has always been dedicated to finding art in different forms, so finding art in fashion fits their mission perfectly.”
A sampling of style
A variety of ensembles will be showcased Thursday, from casual to business and after-hours wear.
Manager Bo Summerford of Reed’s said, “We’ll have some of our hottest items for fall for ladies and men.” Suede is big this season, on clothing and shoes, he noted. Vests and chokers are trending, too, said Brooke Duett at Park Place.
Of taking part in the style show benefit, she said, “I definitely think it’s cool that small businesses around here are able to be a part of helping support each other and community organizations.”
Accessories are important, too. Susan’s Hallmark will show items including hobo bags and jewelry by Ronaldo and Mariana, said associate Midge Maloney.
The event will even include something for expectant mothers.
“People often don’t think about good fashion when it comes to pregnancy, but with modern maternity wear, there are lots of fashionable options for the pregnant mom,” remarked Dr. Pam Lacy, proprietor of Mom 2 Be.
Ann Marie Langford of Caledonia is one of more than two dozen models of all ages participating in the show. “I love fashion, and I love the arts council. It will be great to see things from all the different stores in one place, seeing some of their best items for the upcoming season and supporting a wonderful organization at the same time,” she said.
Arts council President Jerry Hodson expressed appreciation to clothiers and models who are contributing effort and time to make the show a success.
“Without the volunteers in our community, the Columbus Arts Council could not exist,” he said. “And we could not be successful without those who contribute by attending as well. This is just one of any number of events organized by the arts council to raise funds that allow us to bring various forms of art to the community.”
