Mississippi University for Women’s fall Gordy Honors College Forum Series will focus on fostering constructive civic dialogue about national issues during this contentious election season.
Kicking off the series on Thursday, Sept. 1 will be Dr. Brian Anderson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of political science at The W. Based on his research and teaching on campaigns and elections, Anderson will discuss ways to cultivate civic dialogue in the political process and will offer attendees the chance to practice productive discussion.
— On Sept. 29, the series welcomes Dr. Angela Stuesse, assistant professor of anthropology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her book “Scratching Out a Living: Latinos, Race, and Work in the Deep South,” based on her longtime collaboration with Latino immigrants working in Mississippi’s chicken processing plants, explores the way immigration has transformed the state and the South.
— On Nov. 3, the series will feature Dr. Connie Baird-Thomas speaking about health care access and disparities. Associate director of the Social Science Center for Policy Studies at MSU, Baird-Thomas also directs the Mississippi Health Policy Research Center, which provides health and health services data to state agencies, advocacy groups and political officials.
— Providing post-election analysis on Nov. 17 will be Dr. Chanley Rainey, visiting assistant professor of political science at The W, with the talk “A Contest ‘Full of Sound and Fury, Signifying … ‘ What Exactly?: Reflections On American Politics in the Wake of the 2016 Presidential Election.” Rainey is teaching courses on campaigns and elections and the American presidency at The W this fall.
The Series will also feature MUW’s study abroad programs on Sept. 15 and senior Honors research presentations on Dec. 1 and 8.
All presentations are free and open to the community and begin at 6 p.m. in Nissan Auditorium on campus, with the exception of Anderson’s talk, which will be held in Pope Banquet Room.
