Trivia, drones and the real housewives meet Jane Austen highlight the Life Enrichment Program’s fall courses at Mississippi University for Women.
Hosted by the Office of Outreach and Innovation and taught by local community experts, the non-credit LEP classes are designed to fit the physical, intellectual and social needs of all participants while bringing an atmosphere that is both intellectually stimulating and fun.
“The Life Enrichment Program courses are great for the community because they offer subjects that aren’t taught for credit, but are equally stimulating. Participants take these classes because they’re interesting, fun and no tests are given,” said Janie Shields, Life Enrichment Program coordinator.
The first term will begin Monday, Aug. 15 and lasts through Monday Sept. 26. While the second term starts Monday, Oct. 10 and ends Friday, Nov. 18. Classes are held during the day, early evening and Saturday mornings. They meet once a week for one to two hours over the six-week period. The cost for each term is $35 which allows participants to take up to three courses each term.
Drone 101 will cover the basic rules for the safe operation of drones not only in the Golden Triangle area, but throughout the country. Instructor Mike Hainsey, executive director of the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, will lead a discussion on Federal Aviation Administration requirements and primary aircraft flight paths. He will also instruct how to have fun and potentially make money operating a drone.
Former newspaper columnist and lecturer Glenn Lautzenhiser will examine the wild, wacky and wonderful world of trivia, covering a wide range of subjects. Dr. Amy Pardo, professor of English at The W, will discuss how the themes of Jane Austen’s novels can be seen 200 years later in the Bravo TV Reality Series Real Housewives. Participants will read Pride and Prejudice to compare to all of their favorite housewives.
Five Wishes, Dancercise, The 50th Anniversary of Desegregation at MUW: A Study, Mississippi and the Makings of the Civil Rights Movement and Observation, Drawing with Your Child/Grandchild are just some of the other classes being offered during the 2016 fall term.
“We know that some of our participants work through the day so we’re offering more evening classes as well as some one-time courses for people that can’t make it into a six-week course, “Shields added.
On Thursday, Sept. 29, the LEP will take a day trip to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. Participants will begin within the original Lorraine Motel structure and continue through the Legacy exhibits within the Young & Morrow and Boarding House buildings across Mulberry Street.
