Susan Mackay of Columbus, a member of the Bernard Romans DAR chapter, was recently honored as the recipient of the American Heritage Award at the MSSDAR State Conference held in Jackson.
The DAR American Heritage Committee was established to preserve American heritage in the fields of art, sculpture, crafts, drama, literature, fiber arts and music. Members are invited to participate in the various contests conducted by the committee. Mackay won the Mississippi DAR first place award with her crocheted United States flag afghan. The project required 35,399 stitches, including single, chain, slip, magic, half double and double crochet stitches. It measures 38 1/4 inches by 67 inches and took three weeks to complete.
The 2015-2016 heritage theme is “Celebrating the Arts from the Time of Our Founding Daughters to the Present.”
“What better way to honor the 125th anniversary of the DAR than with a crocheted flag afghan celebrating our patriotism through the arts?” said Bernard Romans Chapter Regent Alice Lancaster.
Mackay’s project now advances to be judged in the Southeastern Division of the NSDAR competition.
