The Mississippi University for Women Department of Theatre presents “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 25-28. Shows in Cromwell Theatre at the corner of 10th Street and Sixth Avenue South are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m.
Late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz’s iconic characters charm in this 1999 revised version of the 1967 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Clark M. Gesner. Revised, additional material is by Michael Mayer and Andrew Lippa.
The “Peanuts” comic strip personalities are portrayed by Johnathan Best as Charlie Brown, Candice Monteith as Lucy, Allison Jones as Sally Brown, Gavin Mendus as Linus, and Ryan Savage as Schroeder. Graham Young portrays Snoopy, the iconic canine who leads a Walter Mitty-like fantasy life. Lee Crouse serves as musical director. Katie Welch is stage manager, and Karen Thead is the assostant choreographer.
“‘You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown'” captures all the humor and heart that fans of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip have enjoyed for years,” said William “Peppy” Biddy, professor of Theatre and director of Graduate Studies in Theatre. “The show has been a popular offering for theaters across the country since the 1960s. The 1999 revised edition, which we are presenting, includes new songs that will appeal to audiences of all ages.”
The musical follows its characters from “bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit night.” Some will swing from wild optimism to utter despair, pine for true love, battle the Red Baron and give five-cent advice, all with the openness of early childhood.
How to go
Tickets to the production are $10. Students of all ages may attend for $5. Parents should consider that this is a full-length, two-act play when considering bringing children under the age of 5, Biddy noted. All who enter must purchase a ticket, available at the door, or Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Cromwell’s Office of Communication.
