Christian music artist David Phelps will return to Columbus for a Christmas concert Dec. 19, and First United Methodist Church is inviting area singers to be part of a mass choir to perform with the Grammy Award-winning tenor.
“Christmas for Columbus” will feature Phelps at Whitfield Hall’s Rent Auditorium on the campus of Mississippi University for Women. The charitable event will benefit The Good Samaritan Medical Clinic, Helping Hands and Father’s Child Ministry.
Phelps’ first holiday concert in Columbus in 2013 packed the auditorium. It was also presented by First United Methodist Church and featured a community choir that performed with the artist whose vocal range extends more than three octaves.
“Our goal is for the mass choir to be 100-plus members strong,” said Andy Tentoni on behalf of First Methodist. “There will only be one rehearsal.”
Those interested in being part of the choir should contact Dr. Doug Browning through the church office, 662-328-5252, for more information.
With the Gaither Vocal Band, Phelps has received Dove Awards as well as the Grammy. He has performed on multiple platinum-selling projects. As a soloist, he received nominations for Male Vocalist of the Year. His 2012 live concert DVD, “David Phelps: Classic,” has been aired on numerous television networks, including PBS.
Concert tickets go on sale Nov. 1 at the church located at 602 Main St. and at iTickets.com. General admission tickets are $25. Artist’s Circle tickets are $35. Note that iTickets adds a service charge to the ticket price. The concert begins at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m.
“We hope everyone will save the date for the concert,” said Tentoni. “This will be a very special event.”
