Area high school students look to add to their mathematics skills at the Sonya Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day on the campus of Mississippi University for Women, Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Parkinson Hall.
“We hope to increase high school girls’ awareness of mathematics and to foster their interest in mathematics beyond their high school graduation requirements,” stated Dr. Joshua Hanes, associate professor of mathematics.
Sonya Kovalevsky was a 19th century mathematician and the first woman to receive a doctoral degree in mathematics. To honor her, The W hosts an annual mathematics competition and mathematics workshop for local high school girls and their teachers.
Prizes will be awarded to the individuals with the highest scores in the mathematics competition exam, including W scholarships.
The one-day event encourages young women to continue their study of mathematics and prepare for possible careers in mathematics-related fields.
“Maybe one day these young women will pursue higher degrees in mathematics and obtain jobs in STEM fields,” Hanes said.
Registered participants may check in between 8-8:30 a.m. in the lobby of Parkinson Hall.
