United Way of Clay County will hold its annual Day of Caring and Campaign Kickoff Luncheon Thursday, Sept. 24. Volunteers will work at the various agencies under the United Way umbrella from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. that morning; the luncheon will follow at noon at the Civic in West Point.
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Randy Grimes is among speakers scheduled to address the crowd. Grimes, who played center for the Bucs from 1983 to 1992, is now an interventionist and certified recovery coach. On the podium, he joins Mississippi State Lady Bulldog assistant softball coach Tyler Bratton and Sonya Turner, founder of Project 12 Journey of Home, a substance abuse and addiction liaison service.
“We had a great turnout for our Day of Caring last year,” said Stacy Hays, executive director of United Way of Clay County. “We match volunteers from local businesses and organizations with agencies for a morning of work and fellowship.” The project gives donors and potential donors the opportunity to see where their money is going and how important United Way funding is to the agencies.
Volunteers are invited to attend the kickoff luncheon. “We will recognize our volunteers and other individuals and businesses who play such a major role in the success of United Way each year,” Hays said. “And we have three fantastic speakers lined up to address the crowd, which is usually around 250-300 people.”
The director continued, “Randy has battled an addiction to painkillers due to career-related injuries, and he now serves as an ambassador for the intervention industry. Tyler is a great motivational speaker and has a love for his hometown of West Point. Sonya works hard to bring focus and understanding t the problems of addiction and how they affect not just the addict, but the entire family.”
Each speaker understands the need for United Way dollars and the importance of giving back to your community, she added.
Tickets to the luncheon are $15, available by calling 662-494-8089 or emailing Hays at [email protected]. Anyone wishing to participate in Day of Caring is also encouraged to contact Hays.
