Summer brings with it a host of camps for kids of every age, from swimming and tennis to canoeing and cooking. Art camps are on tap, too. But one camp being offered by the Columbus Arts Council aspires to broaden horizons for 11-to-18-year-olds with field trips to museums and points of cultural interest in the state.
Scheduled for June 22-26, the agenda includes a trip to Philadelphia on Tuesday, June 23 to visit the Choctaw Museum of Art, along with the Cultural Center.
On June 24, campers travel by vans to Jackson to tour the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center.
An outing to Tupelo to visit the Oren Dunn Museum and Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum is scheduled for Thursday, June 25.
“With these trips we hope to educate and inspire through the world of art and culture,” said Rebecca Hester, camp coordinator.
On the opening day of the camp, a photographer in house will discuss photography with campers and show them how to use their cameras.
“This way they can document the week and what they have seen,” Hester said. On Friday of camp week, the youth will finish their projects and display their photos for a final show.
Lunch and snacks will be provided on Monday and Friday, June 22 and 26. For the three travel days of camp week, each participant should bring a sack lunch for the trip. A snack will be provided.
Deadline to register is Friday, June 12. Space is limited. Cost of the camp is $100. Before- and after-care are available for an additional fee.
Each parent/guardian must completely fill out a permission slip at the time of registration in order for a child to be able to go on the field trips.
Register at the Columbus Arts Council at 501 Main St. Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration forms can be downloaded at columbus-arts.org.
Other art camps are offered for children 5-12 years of age.
