Emily Damm of Starkville is one of four Girl Scouts from the Northeast Mississippi region of the Girl Scouts Heart of the South Council who have received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest level recognition given by the organization. Scouts in the ninth through 12th grade work individuallly for one to two years, researching root causes of a community issue. They then develop projects that have measurable impacts and sustainable solutions.
From Starkville’s Troop 320, Damm’s work on her Peace Pole Beautification Project led to her Gold Award. She is the daughter of Dr. Bob and Laura Damm.
Gold Award recipients who join the armed services enter one rank higher than other recruits. Many college and universities offer scholarships specifically for girls who earn the prestigious award.
