Donely Gunn of Columbus, a student at Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, recently earned awards at the Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair. They include Best in Fair for his project entitled “Small Vertical Axis Wind Turbines for use in Underdeveloped Countries.” He also placed First in the Engineering, Math, and Computer Science category, won the Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award, the Air Force Engineering Award, the American Society for Metals Materials Education Foundation Award, Mu Alpha Theta Award, International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Award (I-SWEEP), and the Adventures of the Mind Award.
As an I-SWEEP Award winner, Donely is invited to compete in an international event in Houston, Texas. The Adventures of the Mind Award includes an invitation for a one-week research program with Nobel laureates at Occidental College.
As the Best of Fair winner, Gunn will represent Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair Region V at the International Science and Engineering Fair held in Los Angeles in May.
