As Mississippi University for Women plans its first study abroad experience in Ireland this summer, the MUW 2014 International Series will focus on Ireland and feature Irish party dance lessons and speakers on Irish history and literature. The Series begins Tuesday, Jan. 21 with the film “The Story of Ireland: Age of Nations,” which charts the rise of Irish nationalism, conflicts with Northern Ireland, and the country’s later economic development.
Speakers will include Kelly Marsh, associate professor of English at Mississippi State University, presenting “Imagining Ireland after 1916: Postcolonial Irish Literature” on Feb. 17 and Amber Handy, assistant professor of history at MUW, discussing “Medieval Ireland: Myths and Realities” March 11.
On April 7, Beverly Joyce, professor of art history at MUW, will lead a Ceili Dance Workshop on the basics of the Irish folk dancing popular at traditional Gaelic social gatherings held throughout the country.
All events are at 7 p.m. The film screening and speaker presentations will be held in Martin Hall 220, while the dance workshop will be held in Stark Recreation Center, all on the MUW campus. All events are free and open to the public.
The Series is co-sponsored by MUW’s Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy and College of Nursing and Speech Language Pathology. Assistance is also provided by the Zeta Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. For more information, e-mail Dr. Kim Whitehead at [email protected] or visit the Series’ Facebook page.
