A new guest in the salon remarked, "I want fair hair!" Seldom am I rendered speechless, but this odd term puzzled me to no end. Then, she explained that "fair hair" is the kind of hairstyle that can survive all the rides at the fair and live through long lines for a funnel cake or two.
It's the hair that travels with you through the house of horrors, down the giant slides, and even through several strikeouts while slinging darts at balloons. I do love the fair, and it's that time of year.
Yesterday I hung my glittery fall wreath on the front door, plugged in my old plastic pumpkin and thought about Mama's love of cotton candy from the fair. She also loved anything chocolate: chocolate-chip cookies, chocolate moon pies and a homemade three-layered chocolate cake. Nobody ever made one that beat Mama's, and then there's Yoo-Hoo, her favorite beverage on earth.
Well, I might not be able to promise fair hair, but I can tell you that the newest trend this fall is chocolate -- not the sugary confection we are obsessed with, but the kind turning up on heads everywhere. Chocolate Balayage hair color is scrumptious with rich, dark hues that melt into vibrant shades of caramel, toffee and pecan. It might not be for my golden girls, but then blondes can't have all the fun!
It sounds like a recipe right out of Southern Living magazine, but it's actually a decadent shade of chocolate for the hair. Sarah Jessica Parker has good taste and has been seen around her New York neighborhood with a version of chocolate Balayage. Chocolate best describes the yummy colors, and Balayage is a French technique of hand painting with an assortment of brushes to yield a serving of extraordinary hair color.
Last season it was all about Ombre. Then there was a softer rendition we called Sombre. Now making headlines is chocolate Balayage, and I ain't talking about Hershey or Russell Stover. So when it comes to dessert, think of a deep-fried Oreo or funnel cake with powdered sugar from the fair. When it comes to the hair color trend of the moment, model yourself after Sarah Jessica and ask your color specialist to dish it out. Oh, how I love chocolate!
