When Sister Clarice Carroll retired as professor of obstetrics-gynecology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2010, she headed to Haiti, arriving just weeks after the earthquake that devastated the country to begin her work as a nurse midwife in Gros-Morne, a city north of Port-au-Prince where many earthquake victims migrated.
Carroll will be the featured speaker in Mississippi University for Women’s annual International Series, this year focusing on Haiti.
A member of the Sisters for Christian Community, Carroll continues her work in Haiti with Medicine for Peace and will speak about the state of women’s health care in the country.
The event will be held at 4:30 p.m., April 15, in Nissan Auditorium on the MUW campus. The Mississippi Nurse’s Association, District 18, will make one contact hour of continuing education credit available without cost to nurses who attend the session.
The series will also feature three films. “Égalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution,” about the slave insurrection that led to Haiti’s creation as the world’s first black republic, will be screened Jan. 31. On Feb. 28, the series will feature “The Quake,” which documents the humanitarian crisis that occurred after the earthquake in January 2010. And in preparation for Carroll’s presentation, “Saving Haiti’s Mothers,” about efforts to address the country’s high maternal mortality rates, will be shown March 28. All screenings will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Martin Hall 220 on the MUW campus.
All series events are free and open to the public.
The series is co-sponsored by the College of Nursing and Speech Language Pathology the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy, and the Office of Student Life. Assistance is also provided by Mississippi Nurses’ Association District 18 and the Zeta Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.
