When the mercury rises, we know it’s summertime down here in the South. As we have all been told since we were young’uns, “It’s hotter than blazes.”
Well, you don’t have to succumb to the 100 degree temps without some hot options for beating the heat, at least when it comes to your hair. Nothing is more glamorous than an “updo” this summer. My favorites are right off the pages of In Style, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. If you have longer layers, pull the hair back while still slightly damp into a sleek ponytail, wrap around and pin for a “bun” that is right on trend, and not just for ballerinas.
Another hot option is a “top knot” which is similar to the simple ponytail, but sits higher on the head with a few random pieces sticking out. It’s modern, fresh and right off the runways. The idea here is to do what women have known to do for centuries when the season warms up. Get the hair off the face and neck to keep cool. My mama always said, “Women sweat. Ladies glisten.”
Well, don’t sweat your beauty routine when it comes to the hair because summer is that time of year when we all lighten up. Wear your hair a bit more natural letting those waves shine through for a less manicured style, and don’t fuss over the details as much. Think easy, breezy and beautiful. “Effortless” is the word I most associate with summer.
Highlights can grow out a bit with fewer touch-ups, layers can get a bit more untended, and it’s a superb time to ease into a slight change, whether it’s a simple change of a bang or a brand new shade of beautiful with your hair color. Always don a super stylish hat with a big brim when in the hot sun and nowadays you can even get one with built-in sunblock. By now you all know I’m an advocate for sunscreen, but you can even get a sunscreen for the hair that just spritzes on the locks. Voila, you are preventing color fade, dry ends, and adding some shine all at once.
If you have a shorter cut, nothing is sexier than adding a dollop of mousse applied to damp hair, sweeping it all back away from the face and slipping on a cool pair of shades. Also, try on some of the season’s coolest hair accessories and adorn those short pixies or bobs with a whimsical headband or comb.
The sun is beaming down on us all, but the surefire best way to sizzle is with an even hotter hairstyle that will give you more time for diving into the pool, a great book, or, well, just diving into life.
