The Columbus Arts Council and the Suzuki String Program will host a free duo recital performance of cello and violin at the Rosenzweig Arts Center, 501 Main St., Columbus, Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 7-8 p.m.
Performing will be Carlton McCreery, professor of violoncello and director of orchestral studies at the University of Alabama, and Starkville”s Shandy Phillips, a Julliard-trained violinist
Both musicians teach, perform and conduct regularly with symphony orchestras.
McCreery, former associate principal cellist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, studied in Switzerland and Austria and has been featured in concerts worldwide. He will begin giving cello lessons in the Suzuki program this fall and will serve as guest conductor for the Youth Orchestra.
The duo recital will be an opportunity for students of any age or ability interested in string instruction from a premium teacher to attend a free concert and have a chance for discussion, said Diane Ford, director of the Suzuki program.
Violinist and composer Phillips, a 1992 graduate of Starkville High School, received her Bachelor of Music Degree from The Julliard School in New York City and her Master of Music degree, as well as a Graduate Diploma in violin performance, from The Boston Conservatory.
Her résumé includes repeat performances at The Lincoln Center, as well as concerts in Europe. Phillips received the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award in classical music composition for her original sonata for violin and piano.
About Suzuki
The Suzuki Strings Program of Columbus was founded by Trudy Gildea in 1980, with a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. Cello instruction was introduced in 1986.
The Columbus Arts Council continues to give grant support to the Suzuki Orchestra and Ensemble. Private lesson fees, family dues, and orchestra and ensemble fees paid by parents cover the bulk of expenses required to implement the program.
Students in the Columbus Suzuki Strings program have performed for Mississippi University for Women drama productions, have soloed with the Starkville and Tupelo symphony orchestras, and have played at homes during Pilgrimage, as well as at many other events.
