“It kind of gets you started off right,” Lamar County coach Ken Adams said of the rivalry games. “There’s always a respect factor with either team, but there’s probably more intensity when it comes to the Sulligent game. Nobody here wants to lose to South Lamar, but the community gets even more intense when it comes to the Sulligent game.”

Haynes scattered four hits Tuesday afternoon to lead Starkville Academy to a 9-1 victory at home.
“I didn’t throw one pitch in the same place the whole time,” said Haynes, who allowed three bunt singles. “If I threw outside and she’d foul it off, I’d go inside and high. Every pitch changed completely. It messed them up. The game (against Kemper Academy on Monday) I threw too much in the same place and I messed up and they would hit it.”

But in June, the encounter between South Lamar and Marion County took on a much more significant meaning.
That’s because Marion County, which is located in Guin, Ala., hired Rusty Funk to be its head football coach.
Funk was South Lamar’s coach last season before being relieved of his duties and replaced by his assistant, Josh Harper.
Columbus Crush bids for third softball championship7/8/2009 The Columbus Crush will attempt to make it three in a row this weekend when it plays in the Mississippi Amateur Softball Association 10-and-under slow-pitch state tournament.
The Crush will bid for the title Saturday in Meridian after winning the State Games of Mississippi on June 20 in Meridian and the USSSA state tournament in Philadelphia this past Saturday.
Columbus is undefeated in seven games after beating the Grenada Lady Slammers in the championship games of the State Games and the USSSA state tournament.

Holmes County able to play in World Series because of community support6/26/2009 Dixon credits the support of his community for being able to bring Holmes County High School, of Bonifay, Fla., to the Golden Triangle for the second year in a row to play in the Dizzy Dean High School World Series.
“They take care of us down there,” said Dixon, who has been the baseball coach at Holmes County High School for 19 years. “Our people in our town go way above and beyond what they probably should to make sure we can operate our program the way we need to.”
Richardson stays close to game of baseball through coaching6/26/2009 As an amputee with a prosthetic leg, it would be easy for Ronnie Richardson to have a negative outlook on life.
But through the strength of Christ, Richardson has discovered he has reason to live each day with a positive outlook on life.
The 41-year old Richardson, a diabetic who lost his left leg in 2005 because of an infection, has reason to be grateful by being able to coach baseball.
Richardson has been able to stay close to the game he loves as a coach in the Columbus-Lowndes Park and Recreation Authority’s Dizzy Dean 11-12-year old baseball league.
Johnson selected to play with Notre Dame alumni team6/17/2009 Coming out of high school, Jay Johnson was good enough in the eyes of Lou Holtz to play football at Notre Dame.
Johnson signed with Notre Dame after playing on back-to-back undefeated state championship teams at Starkville High School, and went on to letter as a receiver from 1997-2000.
Nine years after donning the gold helmet of the Irish, Johnson again is good enough in the eyes of Holtz to represent Notre Dame on the football field.
Funk won't rreturn as coach at South Lamar6/11/2009 West Point football player Wallace dies in his sleep5/24/2009 The West Point High School football team lost one of its offensive lineman of the future Thursday when Tyler Wallace passed away in his sleep.
An autopsy report has yet to reveal the cause of death of the 15-year old Wallace, who would have been a sophomore on West Point’s football team this fall.
“Everybody is doing as well as can be expected,” said West Point coach Chris Chambless. “We were shocked. The response from the community as far as helping and praying has been greatly appreciated.”
MPSA honors Starkville Academy's McKenzie5/21/2009 Johnathan McKenzie received more than a diploma Friday when he graduated from Starkville Academy.

“I’d been waiting for that to happen,” Beckwith said of getting hot at the plate. “It felt great because I was helping my team get wins. (The ball looked) like a beach ball. It was a great feeling.”

Heritage comeback falls short against Hillcrest Christian5/10/2009 The Heritage Academy Patriots went from nearly striking out completely to striking back before finally having their season come to an end Friday night.
Heritage was held scoreless on two hits with nine strikeouts through four innings before battling back in a 4-3 loss to Hillcrest Christian in the Mississippi Private School Association Class AAA playoffs.
The Patriots (10-16) finished with only three hits and 16 strikeouts and didn’t have an RBI hit, but had a chance to win when they scored a run and loaded the bases in their last at-bat.

McCrory finishes strong in season debut with Orioles5/6/2009 Bob McCrory had reason to be both pleased and disappointed Tuesday as he made his season debut with the Baltimore Orioles.
McCrory pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, but the team didn’t fare as well by suffering a 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at St. Petersburg, Fla.
“The way I look at it, you have a job to do and that’s go out there and try to get outs,” McCrory said. “It’s disappointing we didn’t win, but I had a job to do to go out there and try to get outs. I’m happy I pitched well, but I was disappointed we didn’t win.”
ICC's Frembgen being groomed for future5/6/2009 Travis Frembgen was accustomed to being the starting catcher for five years on the Hamilton High School baseball team.
But a year after graduating from Hamilton, Frembgen is learning what it means to have patience as a freshman backup catcher to sophomore Dustin Lunn at Itawamba Community College in Fulton.
“I’m day-to-day, basically,” Frembgen said. “I didn’t play in many division games, but the guy in front of me does great behind the plate, and he’s a good hitter, also.
“I’m just waiting my turn. I know I probably could have started at other junior colleges, but I’m happy I’m here.”

New Hope was scheduled to play at Saltillo in the second game of the best-of-three third-round series, but the game was postponed due to rain.
The game has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Saltillo.
The Trojans are seeking another sweep after beating Hernando and Pontotoc in the first two rounds.
New Hope took a 1-0 lead in the series Friday with an 8-3 victory at Trojan Field.

South Lamar’s pitching staff has been decimated by injuries and sickness in recent weeks and Seals hoped the Lady Stallions would be at full strength when the tournament began this morning.
Seals had to pitch seventh-grader Kayla Jones for the first time in a varsity game against Gordo on Friday because Brittany Sanford has been sick, and Laken Hancock and Kendra Wilson have been injured.

Birmingham-Southern ended its season Sunday with the best record in school history.
Birmingham-Southern, ranked No. 17 nationally, swept a doubleheader from Hendrix College to finish the season 32-5 for an .865 winning percentage.
Harris, a 2006 graduate of New Hope High School, contributed to that success as a junior pitcher and third baseman.

Fleming helps SPSU to national ranking4/1/2009 When Ben Fleming signed a scholarship to play baseball at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga., he believed it was an opportunity to play for a championship.
Fleming, a junior outfielder from Columbus, is halfway through his first season at Southern Polytechnic, and he still believes the team has a chance to win a title.
Southern Polytechnic (29-4), of the Southern States Athletic Conference, is off to its best start in school history and is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll.

Flimmons meets expectations3/18/2009 Going into the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships, Randall Flimmons had high expectations for himself.
Flimmons accomplished his goal by winning the gold medal in the long jump at the championships Feb. 28 in Boston.
Flimmons, a 2003 graduate of New Hope High School and a 2007 graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, won the gold with a jump of 25 feet, 7 3/4 inches.
